Sowing the seeds of community.

Seed Potato Day – Saturday 7th February

As we move into February and the days start to get longer, thoughts turn to  the growing season ahead. South East Essex Organic Gardeners ( SEEORG) hold their annual Seed Potato day at Trustlinks lovely Growing Together garden in Westcliff. There is a amazing, slightly mind – boggling, selection of seed potatoes avalible to buy.

The SIT team do a seed share event to capture the interest of all the keen gardeners.

“The sharing of seed is an ancient practice, ensuring the survival of the human species, the local biodiversity of life, as well as local food security. If one gets philosophical about it, one could even say that the seed embodies a traditional, holistic knowledge of life that is as unbroken as the existence of the seed itself, and that is certainly a beautiful thing to think about.”  From

We save seeds from our allotment and gardens, we have packets of commercial seeds that people donate to us and people come along on the day with seeds. There is no requirement to bring seeds to swap, we want to share the love and get everyone growing. We are happy to open packets to give just a few seeds. Sometimes a whole packet of courgettes is a huge commitment!

The event opened at 10 and there was already a queue of eager potato lovers. Once they had stocked up on earlys and maincrops they could wander round and look at the garden and other stalls, there was tea and hot cross buns on offer too.

There was a steady stream of people browsing the stall, it was great to chat with experienced growers and beginners, sharing advice as well as seeds. Our book stall did brisk business too.SIT blogp84690887_2601220766654007_8670560160462143488_n

We shared a space with the folks from “ Once Upon a Tree”  it was a good opportunity to catch up with like-minded friends.

By lunchtime we had built up an appetite, time for delicious curry cooked by the Essex Asian Women’s Association, everyone was talking about how good it was, it got the Mayoral seal of approval!

Temptation was right next door with fudge from “ The Fudge People” It was so yummy my bar didn’t make it home.

Musical accompaniment was provided by the Tuesday Music Group, some of us joined in the sing song.

The joy of these events is creating and renewing connections within the community and Southend is richer because of it.  The Transition Town movement is based on sustainable and resilient communties.

Join us at our Community Allotment to continue the conversation. Our first alloment day of the year is Saturday 29th Feb. We hope to see you there.
